Tacoma’s newest waterfront restaurant opened this afternoon – Boathouse 19, located at the Narrows Marina near Day Island. The 230-seat restaurant is a casual waterfront restaurant serving mid-priced regional American cuisine – burgers, steak and seafood. The restaurant is the project of Denny Driscoll, a man known for operating restaurants in unexpected waterfront locations. Driscoll is the owner of the Lobster Shop restaurants on Ruston and Dash Point, and he also owns the Tanglewood Grill in Gig Harbor. His newest restaurant joins his stable of waterfront restaurants in somewhat obscure areas – the Narrows Marina and surrounding neighborhood isn’t known as a restaurant destination.

The approximately 4,500-square-foot restaurant seats around 160 in the dining room and another 75 on the deck. Driscoll described the concept several months ago as a casual restaurant friendly to drop-in boaters with moorage and a nearby fueling station. Driscoll described the decor as rustic and outfitted with wood, boathouse style.

Tom Small, who serves as the corporate chef for both Lobster Shop restaurants and Tanglewood Grill, which Driscoll also owns, designed the menu of affordable American casual fare with a casual, kitschy delivery – such as fries served in tin cans and desserts baked into mason jars.

Said Small of the menu several months ago in a phone interview, “We’re focusing on regional American food with a waterfront emphasis. We’ll do the greatest hits of comfort American food. We’ll have a blue plate special. Sandwiches we’ll serve on cutting boards with tin-can holders to hold fries. The culinary world is going back to its roots and getting comfortable again, it’s going to be scratch-made food.” He added, “A little playful, casual and fun with the traditions of the regions around the country.” Menu items will draw from the South, the Midwest and East Coast, as well as the Northwest.
