Big eats: Six picks for breakfast with dad

Later this week, I’ll tell you where to take dad for a beer, but today, here’s my list for where to take him for breakfast on Sunday for Father’s Day. My list includes bars, restaurants and cafes with either king-sized meals or breakfast menus that stray from the ordinary.


Biggest chicken fried steak ever: Try it at the Buttered Biscuit (1014 North St., Sumner, 253-826-6099). The CFS comes in multiple sizes, but try the gut buster “Don’t be a Chicken” version for $13.95.

Mexican for breakfast: At Masa (2811 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253-254-0560), chilaquiles ($8.99) were full of starch and crunch: tortilla strips in a red sauce with andouille and home fries. Smoked pork Benedict ($9.99) came with a poblano Hollandaise. Pair a braised rib scramble ($9.99) with a poor man’s mimosa (Tecate and orange juice).


Bacon pancakes: Try the bacon pancake stack at Puget Sound Pizza (317 S. Seventh St., Tacoma, 253-383-4777) with a side of bacon syrup ($8.50). Stuffed hashbrowns were gooooood ($9.25) with a bloody Mary made with a lime-chipotle base ($4).


Corned beef hash: Boxcar Grill in Freighthouse Square (2501 E. D St., Tacoma, 253-503-0098) remains one of my favorite new diners in town for corned beef hash ($8.99) that came with a tangle of potatoes. Homemade raspberry freezer jam should not be missed.

Chicken and waffles: Crockett’s Public House (118 E. Stewart Ave., Puyallup, 253-466-3075), waffles punched with a little cinnamon, chicken with a crispy coating. Maple syrup to dunk and drown both ($13.50, on the lunch menu, you’ll have to eat a little later).


Pulled pork or braised elk hash: Dirty Oscar’s Annex (2309 Sixth Ave., Tacoma, 253-572-0588) has hash in two versions: pulled pork ($10) and braised elk ($14). The crispy pork was paired with equally crispy potatoes and bacon that went swell with kicky jalapeno ketchup (served with eggs). The elk, served with home fries, eggs and toast, comes topped with a sausage gravy.
