First bite: Amante Pizza in Puyallup

A Seattle-centered pizza chain has opened its first Pierce County location. Amante, a pizza and pasta restaurant, is a small takeout and delivery restaurant with pizza and pasta on the menu. Amante has a few counter seats, but no table seating or table service. The restaurant’s website and counter workers described the dough and sauce as housemade. The pizza I tasted was heavy on the cheese and had a dense crust, but displayed the universal sign of undercooked pizza dough – vertical pizza flop.  After trying Amante, I still think Rock Wood Fired Pizza produces a better pie, although the styles are different (it’s tough to beat the blast of a wood-fired oven). Both Amante and The Rock are located in the same neighborhood and both are similarly priced (about $17 for a medium 12-inch specialty pizza). The Puyallup-South Hill pizza market seems eternally crowded with every national chain, as well as the small (and quite good) Rainier Pizza , a competitively priced locally owned restaurant where pizzas are in the $13-$15 range for a medium, baked sandwiches are under $6. My Greek Restaurant on 136th (near where the new Buffalo Wild Wings is going to open) also serves wood-fired pizza (a medium cheese starts at about $10).

I couldn’t find a menu online for the Puyallup restaurant, so I snapped a few pictures of the menu, take a look below.
