The Twisted Kilt Irish Pub in Puyallup soft opened over the weekend, but won’t fully operate until later this week or next

The Twisted Kilt Irish Pub had a soft opening over the weekend, but the owners don’t expect they’ll fully be in business until later this week or possibly next week. The holdup is an inspection of a venting hood in the kitchen. I wrote about the downtown Irish pub and restaurant last week.

Owner Bryan Purdy told me by phone this morning Read more »

Carnitas lovers rejoice: Tacos Guaymas near Tacoma Mall reopened today

Chicken flautas at Tacos Guaymas, which reopened today four months after a fire closed the restaurant. Among the things to like about Tacos Guaymas is the slow simmered whole pinto beans.

It took four months instead of the six weeks they were expecting to reopen, but Tacos Guaymas on 38th Street is back in business.

A fire on Feb. 16 shuttered the popular taqueria near Tacoma Mall. An oily rag spontaneously combusted in the back of the restaurant and made a mess of the kitchen. The back area of the kitchen was fried, the menu board melted from the heat of the flames. Smoke damaged some of the booths. Owner Salvador Sahagun told me in March he thought it would take a month to repair the damage. As is so true in the restaurant world, one month usually turns into somewhere between three to nine months (wouldn’t it be great if an app could convert restaurant time into real-world time? I’d pay at least $4.99 for that app).

I visited today and saw the new menu board and the dining room looked like it had been fluffed and buffed. Read more »

Twisted Kilt Irish Pub & Eatery will open soon in downtown Puyallup

The Twisted Kilt Irish Pub and Eatery wants to be to Puyallup what Doyle’s Public House is to Tacoma: a headquarters for soccer fans.

Owners Bryan Purdy and Jason Pingrey expect to open the Twisted Kilt this weekend or next week at 109 S. Meridian, the location that formerly housed Bagel Boyz Bakery. They hoped to be open by Friday for the beginning of the Meeker Days Festival, but that was contingent upon inspections from the health department. Keep checking back for more updates.

The pub will pour 14 beer taps. Food will be American pub food with an Irish twist. Read more »

More cupcakes? Yes. More cupcakes. Jubilee opens a second store in Puyallup

The bacon chocolate cupcake at Jubilee comes with bacon in the cupcake base. Yes, that is a piece of bacon on top.

Another cupcake shop?

Yes. Another cupcake shop. This is the third Pierce County cupcake shop to open in the past few months. In case you missed it, last month I wrote about Yummers 2 the 3rd Power near Pacific Lutheran University and Blazing Cupcakes on Sixth Avenue in Tacoma.

Now the Proctor cupcake store Jubilee has opened a second outpost on Puyallup’s South Hill. The bakery opened Monday adjacent to Regal Longston Place cinemas.

With three new cupcake bakeries this year, the question has to be asked: Haven’t we reached max capacity for cupcake bakeries? Read more »

Summer produce is here and menus around town reflect the bounty. The Bite restaurant at Hotel Murano is creating weekly specials based on produce Chef Matt Stickle purchases at the Tacoma Farmers Market.
