Barleywine: It’s what’s for breakfast (and on tap in 40 varieties for sampling at the Parkway Saturday)

Beer for breakfast? At the Parkway Tavern, a brew breakfast is standard protocol for the annual Barleywine Festival, happening this weekend, April 30-May 1. The festival, celebrating the strongly flavored beer called barleywine, is in its sixth year and this year’s barleywine list includes more than 40 barleywines for Saturday’s event, and a breakfast Sunday with more locally brewed barleywine and a beer-friendly menu. Here’s what I wrote last year, and the year before, which includes tap lists from the 2009 and 2010 events.

If you’ve never tasted barleywine, think of it is a libation similar in character to wine, but made from grains, so it’s actually just a beer. And a really strong, full-bodied beer at that. Beer geeks covet barleywine for its complex and earthy flavor profiles. It’s not for the weak, it’s a high octane brew.

Here’s a tap list for this year’s festival, along with the menu for Sunday’s breakfast.

Heads up: The IPA Fest at the Parkway is every August.
