Pupusas are devilishly good, but can be difficult to locate in a region short on Salvadoran restaurants. I recently spotted pupusas at the Mis Chiquititas taco bus, a newer truck located in Puyallup’s South Hill.
Never tried a pupusa? Think of the pupusa as the griddled Salvadoran cousin of a taco – or sort of a hybrid sister to the quesadilla, but with a crunchy corn dough exterior stuffed with meats, beans and cheeses. In February, I wrote about two Salvadoran pupuserias – El Pulgarcito in Lakewood and Mi Chalateca in Federal Way – small restaurants big on Salvadoran flavor that serve several varieties of pupusas, from spinach to zucchini, cheese, pork and other varieties. Served with the piquant pickled cabbage salad curtido, a single pupusa is a cheap and filling meal. Two is a feast. They rarely cost more than $1.50-$2 each.
By all appearances, Mis Chiquititas is a pretty standard taco truck serving Mexican favorites of burritos, tacos and tortas in the same location that formerly housed the Taqueria La Carreta taco truck (read my review of Carreta here). The torta tasted absolutely ordinary (No jalapenos or sprigs of cilantro? And you call that a torta??), but the pupusa was another matter.
Unlike other local pupuserias, the pupusas at Mis Chiquititas come in one variety: beans, pork and cheese. I ordered one along with a torta. While the torta, like the first visit, just did not impress, the pupusa was just what I like – a griddled and lightly browned corn disc that had a crispy, lightly fried exterior that yielded to a soft, creamy filling of pork and beans and a pleasing ooze of cheese. You can get one for a few bucks, or order three with a drink for $6.99.
