Welcome to another week of burger lust. Last December, you might remember I chowed my way through more than 20 restaurants to find the best 20 bar burgers you have to eat before you die. Well, here’s the follow-up burger report from your burger tips. This week, I take a bite out of four of the most nominated reader favorites, and write about a newcomer restaurant with really good burgers.
Today’s burger special comes from the Swiss Tavern – home to some of the greatest live music in town, a laid back atmosphere and designated seating for members of Congress. The Swiss has a handful of burgers on the menu, but the Mount Rainier Burger ($12.95) sounds like a food dare – two kinds of pork and two kinds of cheese on a towering burger.
The burger, aptly named by the way, comes on a toasted sesame bun with a swipe of tangy burger spread, crisp lettuce, tomatoes and onions hugging a meat bonanza – a juicy burger patty, bacon and fried salami and a one-two cheesy punch with melted cheddar and, get this, fried cheese sticks. Yes, you read correctly, cheese sticks on a burger. It’s excessively genius – fried mozzarella on a burger. I’d never even thought of it before, but the texture was brilliant – the gooey mozzarella sticks tugged apart into cheesy threads with every bite. My only complaint was that the bun just couldn’t stand up to the meaty weight of this behemoth. This is a four-napkin lunch. Don’t bring a date along to watch. Thin-cut fries come on the side.
The Swiss gets my vote for burger about town most likely to raise your cholesterol count. If the decadence described above wasn’t enough, you can top the burger with a fried egg for $1. Ta da! Cholesterol nightmare scenario #78. I won’t tell your doctor if you don’t tell mine.
