Jason Winniford’s new restaurant JW is the hottest seat in Gig Harbor. The small restaurant with seating for fewer than 30 opened March 4 and the word is that they’ve been packed ever since. I took a first look at the restaurant recently and will have a first bite report next week. Click “more” to see the menu that features seared sea scallops with risotto, wild boar bourguignon with grilled polenta and a tri tip steak with mashed potatoes.

Menu prices: Middle price point, under $20. This is an affordable indulgence, much like Gig Harbor’s Green.House. I was impressed with the quality delivered for the price paid.
The scene: A small restaurant with seating for under 30. Several four-top tables make for intimate or at least semi-private dining, but a few awkwardly placed two-seat high top tables won’t be cozy, comfortable or coveted.
Reservations: On weekends, mandatory. Otherwise, advised.
Decor: Funky lodge meets cozy cabin. I don’t know how else to describe it, but it’s elegant around the edges.
Service: Effortless and spot-on outstanding. A complimentary sample of wine in the small lobby followed by prompt seating made for a nice start to the evening. Your server will wipe the crumbs from the table, but won’t do it in a precious or exaggerated way. Dishes will be cleared without you noticing. This is a restaurant that understands service. Think Brix 25, but with a slightly more casual approach.
Wine book: Multiple pages with plenty of Northwest bottles. The by-the-glass selection is brief.
