Pot pie as big as your head: Sidebar Bistro in Tacoma puts a nice twist on an old comfort classic

Chicken pot pie is as big as my head at the Sidebar Bistro.

Tacoma’s Sidebar Bistro elevates sandwiches beyond the ordinary and does a brisk lunch business because of that. I’ve written about their Reubens and BLTs, and recently tried the Sidebar Cuban sandwich (stay tuned for a report on that). I’d never ventured much into the entree section of the menu, but a chicken pot pie on my last visit caught my eye.

The pie ($12.95) was an oversized monstrosity, and quite possibly one of the biggest versions I’ve ever dug into at a restaurant. At Sidebar, the crust gets a nifty spin – puff pastry is baked right over the top of the dish, and it puffs and balloons into layer after layer of flaky crust. The puffy pastry dome was just starting to deflate when it arrived steaming hot at our table. Inside, a creamy white gravy suspended chunks of red potatoes, green beans and rough cut pieces of carrot. It tasted of thyme and rosemary. The gravy – salty, but tasty – started out thin, but thickened once the pie had cooled. Shredded chicken dotted the pie (I would have liked more).

Sidebar features other comfort bistro entrees on its menu, including lasagna and pork spareribs.
