No pie shop in Old Town, but I do know where to find great pie in Puyallup

Strawberry rhubarb is my favorite pie offered at Don's Drive-In in Puyallup.

I received a note today from Alyssa Lewis of the Seattle Pie Company. She reported that the Old Town Pie Company is not going to open, which doesn’t come as a surprise. After all, the shop has been three months delayed. I first wrote about the company opening a Tacoma outpost here. I’ll write more on the subject later this week, but for now, I do know that the pie shop may still be coming to Tacoma, just not Old Town. Lewis said she and her husband Patrick have hired a real estate agent to scout other Tacoma locations (Metropolitan Market in Proctor also continues to sell their pies). She’s also open to suggestions if readers have ideas for neighborhoods that would be well suited for a pie shop and cafe (psst … now is the time to pitch that empty storefront in your neighborhood). And now for some news on where you can find pies: a Puyallup pie restaurant that masquerades as a burger joint.

OK, well, it’s not a pie restaurant, it really is a burger joint. But when I want pie, I head to Don’s Drive-In, a small spot across from the Puyallup Fairgrounds. Their pie? It’s luscious, sweet, decadent pie. Their burgers are pretty decent, too. But pie? I keep going back for pie. I even tried to order some for a party last November, but their pie maker was on vacation. I ordered instead from Suzie Sidhu of the Pie Goddess in Enumclaw (Sidhu operates out of CafĂ© Panini, 1537 Cole St., Enumclaw; 360-802-5132).

Here’s what I wrote last July after eating the chocolate pie and strawberry rhubarb at Don’s. I just got off the phone with Don’s to find out what’s on the menu now: peach, strawberry rhubarb (my favorite), marionberry and more are in the pie display case.

Every day brings new pie flavors, so call before you go to hear the day’s pies. Gina Burkhammer, daughter of the owners of Don’s, said that she waits all year for fresh berry season when Jennifer, the pie maker for Don’s, makes  fresh berry pies. I’m with Gina, I love going to Don’s this time of year.

Your turn: Where’s your favorite place for pie? Every tried the pie at C.J.’s in Bonney Lake?
