Week of beer: Tacoma Tap Night, a beer dinner in Gig Harbor and Washington Brewers festival – all this week

A week of beer events starts today with the first ever Tacoma Tap Night at five local pubs, continues with a beer tasting dinner Thursday at Gig Harbor’s Brix 25, and ends with the annual Father’s Day weekend Washington Brewers festival north of Seattle. Click “more” for the details.

TAP NIGHT TACOMA
When: 6 p.m. today, five local pubs

In just a few minutes, Tacoma’s first tap night will start. The tap will be a monthly happening the second Monday of every month. The Red Hot, The Parkway Tavern, Doyle’s Public House, The Swiss, and Meconi’s Pub will all simultaneously tap a different, fresh cask of ale. Here’s the tap list from Chris Miller, owner of The Red Hot:
The Red Hot – Schooner Exact Limited Edition 253-Grid IPA Firkin
The Parkway – Two Beers Brewing Dry-Hopped Evolutionary IPA Firkin
The Swiss – Hales Ales Supergoose IPA Firkin
Doyles – Belhaven Wee Heavy

I asked Miller to answer a few questions about Tacoma Tap Night:
Q: Whose idea was this? It’s brilliant.
A: “It started with two of us over a pint, then bloomed from there. This small community of tavern/pub owners always seem to come together for other reasons, so it only seemed natural.”
Q: How do you decide which beer to tap? Is it each location’s choice, or is there a methodology behind the tapping?
A: “It’s just each location’s choice. The only stipulation is no two same beers being poured during the same event.”
Q: Four of the five beers tapped are IPAs, except for the Scottish ale. Was that accidental? Intentional?
A: “Coincidental. I guess our love of the hop showed on the first go round. I know we have some stuff coming on future Tap Nights that are not IPA’s.”
Q: How will the event evolve?
A: “We hope the event will grow into itself. We’re planning a Tap Night Tacoma Club of sorts, with membership glassware that you keep and re-use at each event that entitles you to specials. Maybe a Tap Night Bus in our future as well. We’re really just trying to introduce people to new styles of beer, and have a little fun while doing it. It’s a great excuse for a great social gathering, and to enjoy great craft beer at locally owned and operated taverns/pubs. I really cannot wait for this event, we’re all totally psyched for it.”
In other Red Hot news: the Food Network show Chefs vs. City that filmed at The Red Hot a few months ago will air June 18 at 10 p.m. Said Miller, “It’s the Seattle show, but it is made very clear that TRH (The Red Hot) is NOT in Seattle, but in Tacoma.”

WASHINGTON BREWERS FESTIVAL
When: Friday-Sunday, Kenmore at Saint Edwards State Park

This weekend is the Washington Brewers Festival, an annual Father’s Day weekend tradition, held in Kenmore, just north of Seattle. More than 200 brewers will offers samples of their brews.

If you’ve gone every year, here’s something you should know: Parking will be limited this year. From the website: “On-site parking at Saint Edward State Park is very limited due to the recent maintenance work at the Park. There is a $15 on-site parking fee on Saturday and Sunday (free on-site parking on Friday). You can purchase On-site Parking Passes here. The Festival encourages everyone to take public transportation or park at one of the designated off-site parking lots and take the FREE shuttle bus to the Park. Motorcycle and handicap parking is free and there is a reserved handicap parking area close to the admission booth.”
