First Bite: Harmon Tap Room

We popped in for a quick first bite at the new Harmon Tap Room, which opened last Monday in a space that’s just around the corner and below its sibling restaurant, The Hub.

We liked what we found: a smaller dining room with a push for convivial gathering at two large communal tables that span the length of the front dining room. Just beyond the dining room is a glass-enclosed industrial room displaying brewing tanks and brewers Mike Davis, Bill Lundeen and Jeff Carlson at work. The scene made for voyeuristic foodie gazing during our meal there, but I also didn’t want to make them feel like Ivan the Gorilla. But I suppose the Harmon wouldn’t have put them behind glass if they didn’t want lookie loos. Read more »


First Bite: Blue Cannon Pizza Company in Gig Harbor

Shawn Burke’s new Gig Harbor restaurant is a den for kids and families, which makes it even more appropriate that his 4-year-old son Mason named the Blue Cannon Pizza Company. The name is an intersection of Mason’s favorite color and the family’s favorite vacation locale.

“My wife (Dana) and I have been going to Cannon Beach for about 10 years … It’s our little close-to-home getaway. I proposed to her down there. We got married on the beach at Cannon Beach,” Burke said in a phone interview. Read more »


Mizu Japanese Steakhouse opens in Gig Harbor

A teppanyaki style Japanese steakhouse opened Monday in Gig Harbor. Mizu is the third outpost for the local chain, which also has restaurants in Southcenter and Covington.

Its owners describe it as an upscale teppanyaki concept.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term teppanyaki, think Benihana, the restaurant known for a “dinner and a show,” where a chef cooks meats and vegetables on a flat-top grill at a station surrounded by seats. Read more »


Sip in Gig Harbor closes its doors

Sip in Gig Harbor has closed. This just in my email:

It is with great sadness we announce the closure of Sip. at the wine bar & restaurant in Gig Harbor. Monday, May 24, 2010 was the last day of operation.

Brewtopia beer store coming this summer

Beer geeks (me included) rejoice, the owners of Jonz Catering, which also runs the Workz Café at the Tacoma Art Museum, have a new project: Brewtopia, a beer bottle shop.

Jonz Catering owners Linda and David Dagley have applied for a license with the state liquor board to open the bottle shop in Tacoma. They’re looking at two locations. Read more »

Like you, I’ve been wondering what’s going on with the pie shop that was supposed to open in Tacoma this month. I got an email this morning from Alyssa Lewis, owner of the Seattle Pie Company with husband Patrick, who gave me an update about the future of her pie shop, Old Town Pie Company, on North 30th. I wrote about the pie shop here in February when the popular Seattle pie shop and cafe announced it would open a Tacoma outpost in the space that formerly housed Old Town Photo. Lewis told me today…. Nosh on Safeco Field eats with Craig Hill as your guide

News Tribune Adventure writer Craig Hill dove into the deeply fattening world of ballpark eats at Safeco Field in today’s GO section. This line says it all, “The menus at Safeco’s 83 concession stands offer more than 500 ways for fans to forget their sorrows – including 12 different hot dogs, at least five styles of fries and 99 different beers.”
