Sweet cream and walnut French toast at the Buttered Biscuit in Sumner.

Last week, I wrote about 15 kinds of pancakes at the Original Pancake House. Today, I’m delving into waffles and French toast. I’ve had particularly good versions of both in recent weeks at two restaurants, the Buttered Biscuit in Sumner and Villa Caffe & Imbibery in Tacoma. Click more to read about malted waffles and sweet cream French Toast.

Malted waffles at the Villa Caffe & Imbibery in Tacoma.

I wrote about the panini sandwiches at Tacoma’s Villa Caffe & Imbibery in early March. Besides their outstanding sandwiches, I’ve developed a craving for Villa’s malted waffles. Owner and chef Robyn Murphy adds Carnation malted milk powder to her waffle recipe. Take what you know about old fashioned ice cream diner malts and apply the concept to waffles. The result is a mouthfeel that is rich and chewy. At Villa, my crispy malted waffle ($4.95) came topped with a combination of berries – raspberries, blueberries and blackberries – poured over a pile of whipped cream. Syrup simply was not necessary for this waffle. I appreciated the berries weren’t sweetened, either.

At the Buttered Biscuit, a funky diner in Sumner with a down-home grandma vibe, the walnut sweet cream French toast ($7.95) starts with four slices of egg bread dipped in a vanilla kissed egg batter. The egg bread is fried, then served with a buttery sweet cream sauce and a float of melted butter. Walnuts pieces were sprinkled on top. A low-cal affair this is not, but if you’re ordering French toast, you’re probably not dieting. If you are, the salads at the Buttered Biscuit looked extraordinary. We saw a few come out of the kitchen that looked impressive.
