Bars for big games: Where do you go?

Pub fare I can get my hands around: the Kobe burger at West End Pub in Tacoma.

On Super Bowl Sunday, I know where I’d go to catch the game … if I were leaving my couch. I may have little sports acumen (TNT Sports Editor Darrin Beene can confirm this), but I do know how to spot a bar that offers good television viewing. And I know my way around bar food.

You may have caught my blog post a few weeks ago about my bacon lust for the stuffed cheeseburgers at Cheers South Hill Grill. It’s a bar and grill with a fairly standard menu with economically-priced sandwiches in the $10 range and grilled steaks, fish and pasta entrees in the $10-$14 range.

What I really liked was the menu of stuffed burgers that includes the bacon cheeseburger, a stuffed jalapeno and pepper jack burger, stuffed ham and American, stuffed mushroom and Swiss and an Italian stuffed burger with mozzarella and salami. All are priced at $10.95 and come with fries.

What I didn’t mention in my previous post about Cheers is that the vantage point and placement of screens is really well designed. In every dining area, it seems that a game is viewable from every corner of the restaurant and bar.

West End Pub & Grill

The West End Pub & Grill is one of those places you know about if you appreciate above average pub food, it’s a great place to nosh and watch a game. There are 10 screens alone in one section of the bar. You can turn your head 180 degrees, and not miss a flash of action on the screen – the televisions are aligned just perfectly. The vantage point is stellar from just about ever seat in the house.

The service is homey and nice. It’s the kind of place where servers call you “honey” and “sweetheart.” I admit this is a girly observation, but I appreciate that West End serves its food on colorful fiestaware style bowls and plates. The plates are substantial, and they ratchet up the presentation a notch.

The prime rib dinner ($10.95 on my last visit, but it’s been a few months, so prices and menu items may have changed) is the must order for game viewing. I also like the Kobe burger ($9.50), a juicy, two-handed affair, slathered with pungent blue cheese and served with a pile of crisp fries. The chicken burger on my last visit ($9.75) was a bit dry, but the sweet Jack Daniel marinade elevated the burger to noshable.

Masa

My happy hour story about Masa, the Sixth Avenue bar and restaurant, publishes this Friday. While doing happy hour research at Masa last month, I couldn’t help but notice the placement of the television screens in the bar, yielding decent views from just about every corner. And the Masa happy hour deals cannot be beat. My favorite is the $2.75 taco.

Here’s a sneak preview of my happy hour review that publishes this Friday: “The menu has six tacos on the menu, all bargain priced at $2.75 each. Forget standing in the rain at your favorite taco bus, tacos at Masa are the real deal. We dove into the mahi mahi, grilled fish wrapped in a warm tortilla and topped with lime-kissed cabbage. The smoked pork taco was a delicious, juicy mess that dripped a sweet grilled pineapple-cilantro topper. The carne asada spilled out of its tortilla wrapper with a generous portion of tender, grilled chunks of steak topped with pico de gallo and cilantro.”
