Stuffed burgers: Bacon cheeseburger ooze at Cheers South Hill Grill

We’ve been mired in heavy duty editing projects this week and I’ve had barely any time to get out and do any sort of restaurant reporting, but there is one thing that hit my radar: the stuffed bacon cheeseburgers at Cheers South Hill Grill.

I haven’t been this happy about bacon on a burger since I bit into the bacon explosion burger at Woody’s on the Water last September.
That burger, which Woody’s has renamed the “bacon extravaganza,” is a riff on the famous BBQ Addicts Bacon Explosion recipe – bacon, stuffed inside sausage, wrapped inside more bacon, then rolled up, smoked, sliced and served on a bun. Did your arteries clog reading that?
Like Woody’s, Cheers puts a fun spin on its burgers. Forget cheese and meat on top of a burger patty – that’s so 20th century. At Cheers, the toppings are cooked right inside the burger. They call them “South Hill Stuffers.”

Cheers, the sports bar restaurant that opened quietly a few months ago in the spot that formerly housed The Keg restaurant, offers a half-dozen stuffed burgers (and an extensive menu of other kinds of burgers and grill items). I actually had ordered the coho salmon, but I was so dismayed with my chalky, overcooked fish and plain
broccoli-cauliflower vegetables, I gave up on my dish and turned my attention to my dining partner’s stuffed bacon cheeseburger ($10.95).

It’s a behemoth half-pound burger, and comes dressed with lettuce, tomato and onion relish. A sturdy onion roll enveloped the half-pound patty that looked to be two quarter-pound burger patties pressed together around cooked strips of bacon and cheddar cheese. The burger came nicely charred with perfect grill marks, which, to me, acts an early alert system that a burger has been treated kindly by the kitchen. Within one bite into the charred, juicy beef, the cheese began to flow out of the center of the burger in gooey channels. Eating the burger at a slight angle helped contain the cheese. Thick, chewy pieces of bacon are embedded inside the patty, too. Maybe they should be woven into the patty so they can act as a cheese dam. Just a thought.

Also on the stuffed burgers menu at Cheers: stuffed jalapeno and pepper jack, stuffed ham and American, stuffed mushroom and Swiss and an Italian stuffed burger with mozzarella and salami. All are priced at $10.95. I’ll be back for the mushroom and Swiss.

Though Cheers has been open for four months, our server told us, the sign just went up recently on the exterior of the building. It’s a bar and grill restaurant with a fairly standard bar/grill menu with economically-priced sandwiches in the $10 range and grilled steaks, fish and pasta entrees in the $10-$14 and up per entrée range.
