How cold is too cold for beer?

TNT Diner reader Barley Jim posted in this thread on the new Hop Jack’s restaurant in Bonney Lake that he was chagrined to be served a beer slushee at the restaurant. More specifically, he wrote, “The kid behind the bar took a VERY frozen glass and poured beer from a tap that had a 1 inch thick coating of ice all over it! The result was a beer slurpy! You Know… SLUSH! My beer foamed momentarily, gasping it’s last breath then turned to slush 1-2inches deep! DEAD! My beer was now DEAD, DEAD! ANYONE WHO LIKES BEER WOULD TELL YOU FREEZING IS DEATH! I sat there at the bar silent, starring in disbelief. My wife turned pale just watching me.”

Question: Had the beer at Hop Jack’s? Was it too cold for you?

It was way too cold for me. The Deschutes Black Butte porter had far less character and depth. I couldn’t taste the deeper coffee notes. It was total beer disappointment for me.
