Two beer events are happening Saturday in Tacoma.
The first-ever Tacoma Craft Brew Festival, which SoundLife reporter Ernest Jasmin wrote about in today’s food section, takes place from noon-9 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 3) at the Foss Waterway Seaport, 705 Dock St. On tap will be brews from 7 Seas Brewing, Fish Brewing, Engine House No. 9, Harmon Brewery, along with about 40 other breweries from Washington and beyond. Admission is $18 in advance, $20 day of event; must be 21 or older to attend
The second beer event is Maltoberfest, a significantly more quirky and little known beer gathering paying homage to malt liquor. Yes, that’s right, malt liquor. It also takes place Saturday (Oct. 3), at Bob’s Java Jive.
I tried to put a foodie spin on malt liquor, but came up empty handed. So I asked organizer Craig Egan, who with Jen Orr founded Maltoberfest, to answer a few questions about malt liquor and Maltoberfest IV. Specifically, what kind of food do you pair with malt liquor? And how do you make a beer cocktail with malt liquor? Egan’s answers….
Who came up with the idea of Maltoberfest?
The idea for Maltoberfest came from a previous themed party we held, which was a fortified wine tasting. We were trying to figure out the cheap beer equivalent of that, and the idea for a malt liquor Oktoberfest party was born. The idea was so funny it took on a life of its own. We couldn’t think of anything quite as Tacoma as celebrating cheap brew.
What kind of beer will you serve?
We’ll have Olde English 800, Mickey’s, and 211 Steele Reserve. We also have orange juice to mix with the OE to make the infamous Brass Monkey.
Brass Monkey? Is that, dare we ask, a malt liquor cocktail?
OE and OJ is way better than you’d think. It’s actually the most popular thing we serve. While we always end up drinking leftover malt liquor until Christmas, we always have to head to the store to get more OJ.
What kind of food can you pair malt liquor with?
You could pair malt liquor with almost anything cheap, including other malt liquor. I’m guessing most people substitute malt liquor for food instead of serving it with.
What kind of food will be served at Maltoberfest?
Hot dogs and sauerkraut.
What’s the event like?
The scene is pretty diverse. Since we have a wide variety of bands, ranging from hip-hop to polka to indie rock, we tend to get as diverse of a crowd. It’s mostly a younger scene, I guess, but the love of malt liquor and music spans all generations.
