A few weeks ago, A&E editor Craig Sailor assigned me a burger story for the GO section that will publish later this month. His directive: eat at 10 burger joints. Report back who has the juiciest burgers and tastiest fries.
So I trekked to Wally’s in Buckley, Friesenburgers by the Tacoma Dome, Mary’s Burger Bistro on Pacific and a few others. I don’t know if I’ll get to 10 by early next week, but I’m hoping to get to at least seven (clogged arteries and all).
My hallmarks of good burgers and fries: Burgers should be juicy, but not too greasy. Hand-formed, seasoned patties get extra points over the frozen, generic Sysco kind. The patty should be beefy tasting, with discernible chunks of meat, rather than a gray, homogeneous burger puck. As for fries, I like my fries handcut and crispy. I lean toward shoestring fries over thicker cut fries.
My question to you: where do you go around town for a great burger? What makes it good?

A nice, juicy patty on a Kaiser roll. I liked that the 1/3 pound burgers were juicy, even though they were frozen food service patties. The fries are fresh cut and come in large servings.
Wally’s Drive-In: 282 Highway 410, Buckley; 360-829-0871
The patties here are 1/4 pound gray hockey pucks. The charburger was, indeed, charred – so much so that there was no juice left in the thin patty. Fries are of the freezer variety and are nothing worth remembering. If it weren’t for the shakes, I wouldn’t be back.

An interesting menu with good burger variety, including bison and salmon burgers. My cheeseburger burger was decent, but the frozen patty lacked the beefy flavor I like. It was good, just nothing beyond what I could do at home with a freezer patty. The fries are decent for freezer fries – thick cut steak fries. They were done to perfection.
