Harbor Greens Wine Bar opens today

The co-owners of the Harbor Greens market in Gig Harbor are expanding their love of wine a few doors down from their upscale grocery store.

Chad Roy and Scott Teodoro will open the Harbor Greens Wine Bar at 3 p.m. today in the Forza Coffee Shop.

Roy and Teodoro opened Harbor Greens Market in June 2007. The store has an extensive wine selection, and selling wine at the market really is what set the duo on a path to opening a wine bar.

"Customers kept saying, ‘I wish I could try this before I buy it,’" said Teodoro. How convenient that customers will be able to sample the wine at the bar, then walk a few doors down to buy the bottle. Or at least that’s what Roy and Teodoro hope will happen.

In December, they found a convenient opportunity to locate the wine bar near their market – they took over the franchise of the nearby Forza coffee shop. They spent a few months remodeling the interior – while still operating the coffee part of the business – and added 20 tables and nearly 50 seats for wining and dining. They plan to operate the business as a coffee bar by day, seven days a week, and as a wine bar/light dinner destination from Wednesday to Saturday evenings (see hours below).

The exterior of the building still says Forza Coffee, so look for that if you visit the wine bar. This is a pilot concept for the Forza Coffee chain that has been pretty focused on just coffee. Teodoro and Roy said the concept is one that makes sense to diners looking for more options – especially late-night dining – in the Harbor. They’ll offer food and wine until midnight on weekend nights.

The wine bar concept is light fare paired with more than 100 kinds of wine, heavy emphasis on Northwest wineries. An extensive by-the-glass list includes $3-$4 half glass pours. Paired with small plates nibbles that are priced $6-$10, the duo hope to attract diners with all kinds of dining budgets.

The food is all small plates/tapas style appetizers with some interesting twists – caprese flatbread, baked brie with balsamic sweet onion jelly and crostini, a selection of salads and sandwiches, smoked salmon and cheese on apple slices (all priced between $6 and $10). The chef is Monica Potucek, who worked for a local caterer for 10 years.

Although Roy and Teodoro have worked in the food business, this is a first restaurant venture for both. If you stop by and drink or eat, be sure to tell TNT Diner readers what you thought.

Harbor Greens Wine Bar and Forza Coffee

HOURS: Coffee served from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. The wine bar/kitchen will operate from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 3 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.
