After some construction delays, word from The Matador is that the sexy Tex-Mexy restaurant and tequila bar will open in Tacoma on Nov. 9. There’ll be a "Sneak Peak" grand opening party for friends, vendors and media on Nov. 8. Look for it at the corner of Pacific Avenue and South Seventh Street in downtown.
Here’s what emerged from my notes after checking out Matadors in Ballard and West Seattle:
Rustic handcrafted interior woodwork and exterior metal detailing accent quasi-Spanish colonial décor. Both restaurants are fun and moody, with a lively bar-and-restaurant vibe, colored glass light fixtures and fire pits – a Matador signature.
The menu is more Tex than Mex, but still pleasing. Braised carnitas nearly melted on the fork. Enchiladas were filled with tender simmered chicken and smothered in a flirtaciously sweet smoky red sauce. Tex-Mex spring rolls weren’t the fusion fiasco I’d expected. They were filled with shredded chicken, corn and black beans. Sesame chile and avocado-sour cream sauces were dipping delights. Entrees are $6.95-$16.95.
