From sex to suds: Brewpub afoot in old Mecca Theater

Something is brewing at downtown Tacoma’s last bastion of porno movies and cheap sex toys: A "little microbrewery," and a movie theater, according to one of the principal developers who today purchased the Mecca Theater building, and the Tacoma brewpub operator involved in the project.

"We’re looking at it seriously," Ron Gintz of Tacoma’s Gintz Group told me today. "Talk to Pat Nagle at The Harmon about it."

I put a call out to Nagle, owner of The Harmon Brewery and Restaurant, for details. He’s in meetings all day, and I was in a meeting when he called back. But here are some details he left on my voicemail:

A small brewery and bar that will utilize the Mecca’s old movie theater. Look for microbrews and movies – perhaps not on the scale of a McMenamins but still a cool transformation from the Mecca’s brand of entertainment.

Nagle said he’s working on a plan for a group of investors to buy the restaurant space in the building that was built in 1908 and housed the Stothart Hotel.
