Fade in, Doyle’s Public House, Tacoma:


WOMAN CUSTOMER: I’d like something local.


BARTENDER: You’re in the wrong place, honey.


Cut to: A brewery-restaurant somewhere in Pierce County:


RESTAURANT CRITIC: How’s your Saison?


BARTENTER: Not very good.


Cut to: A Break


As in gimme a break already.


I like Doyle’s. It’s a fine pub with a strong selection of European beer – and only European beer.


Look, I dig authenticity as much as the next guy. I don’t want Doyle’s to install a PBR tap. However, was I hung over the day they passed the Tacoma Pub Purity Act?


All I’m saying is there are some pretty good Northwest beers that honor Euro brews. Parkway is pouring Elysian’s scrumptious Bete Blanche, for one example.


One local rotating tap – that’s all I ask, Doyle’s. Not just for me, but for that woman at the bar and all her friends.


As for the brewery-restaurant in Pierce County where the bartender told me the house Saison wasn’t very good? He was right: the taster he poured me was flatter than diluted dung and reeked of cardamon and black pepper.


Even so, that’s no way to sell a beer.
