Here are some left-over tidbits from my interview with food crusader/nutritionist Marion Nestle, who’s quoted in my food fright commentary. In addition to super-sizing, she’s bothered by the number of places in which we encounter food.
“Creating a social environment in which it’s OK to eat all day long also encourages people to eat. When did food get into bookstores, for example? Or libraries, where you used to be restricted from eating. Vending machines in schools. Barnes and Nobles has cafes. All bookstores have cafes. It used to be that they would stand at the door and slap you if you tried to bring in food into a bookstore. There were signs all over the place: you can’t eat here. Our library at New York University used to have signs all over saying you can’t eat here and now it’s got a café in it.”
On food in the workplace:
“That’s a big social change. And the assumption that it’s OK to bring in sweets all day long in schools and offices, those are social changes.”
So next time your boss puts out a bowl of chocolates on her desk, or some walking-heart-attack pod-person co-worker pushes left-over pizza, just remind them they’re killing you, bite by tempting bite.
