Grit City Bootlegs No. 58: The Fabulous Wailers return

The Fabulous Wailers had been out of commission since December as front man Kent Morrill battled serious illness (related story here.) But the godfathers of Northwest rock roared back into action this weekend with a pair of crowd pleasing and sometimes emotional performances, the first Saturday in Issaquah and the second last night capping off a Gulf coast benefit at the Swiss Tavern. Morrill sounded great, and shaky camera work aside, I managed to record this garage-rock classic for those of you who missed it.

The Fabulous Wailers, ailing singer to play first shows in months

Legendary Tacoma garage-rock band, the Fabulous Wailers, and ailing front man Kent Morrill will be back in action this weekend, headlining their first performances since last fall.

The iconic garage-rock band – which ushered in the Original Northwest Sound with 1959 hit “Tall Cool One” – will headline a benefit concert for Seattle Children’s Hospital, with their set scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sunday at BMC Select in Issaquah.

Then, on Sunday, Wailers will top the bill of a Gulf of Mexico relief show that will also feature the Jerry Miller Band, Malcolm Clark, China Davis and more at Tacoma’s Swiss Tavern.

The Wailers have been out of commission for several months as front man Kent Morrill has undergone surgeries and treatment for life-threatening prostate cancer. But the singer said he recently tested the waters by singing a few songs with the Neil Rush Band at the Highlander in Seattle.

Grit City Bootlegs No. 41: Matt Coughlin Band does “Thriller”

I think Revengers may have started something with that clip I posted of the band doing their best Weezer impression.

As it turns out, the Matt Coughlin Band does a pretty crazy cover of the King of Pop’s signature song, “Thriller.” But the MCB puts an Americana spin on it with some fiddle and drummer Dalton Shotwell delivering Vincent Price’s spooktastic spoken word parts. Here they are at Beyond the Bridge Cafe in Sumner.

Matt Coughlin Band (soon to be called something else, they tell me) is the subject of my column for Friday’s GO section. Your next chance to catch ‘em live is Dec. 10 at the Swiss. But before that you can click the “more” button to see what they’re like when they’re not rockin’ the Jacko.

Tributes to slain Lakewood police officers

I’ve caught wind of a couple of tributes to Mark Renninger, Ronald Owen, Tina Griswold and Greg Richards, the four Lakewood police officers who were gunned down Sunday morning.

First, Fitz from KKWF-FM (The Wolf, 100.7) is asking listeners go gather for a candlelight vigil at Lakewood town center from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday (Dec. 4), and form in the shape of a heart in honor of the Lakewood Four. Participants will gather in the Lakewood Towne Center parking lot behind Target, 5731 Main St., SE, in Lakewood.

And I’m also hearing that
