Owner says Rhythm & Brews will re-open

Sometimes the third time isn’t the charm.

Tacoma club owner Chris Wallis’ new music venue, Rhythm & Brews, went dark on Nov. 20, less than two months after its official grand opening. And it appeared to be the third short lived venue to pass through his space, at 733 Market St., since he opened the South Sound Garage there in 2007. (Wallis leased the space to the owners of Club Juno, a dance club, the following year.)

But today Wallis insisted the closure is temporary. “We’re definitely reopening,” he said, explaining that he and his girlfriend, the venue’s general manager, were going on vacation with plans to have the club back up and running around Jan. 15.

More acts headed to new Rhythm & Brews

It appears Gary Grape of the South Sound Blues Association will handle most of the booking down at the new Rhythm & Brews club downtown, which tells you what the musical focus will be. Oct. 8: Little Bill and the Bluenotes
Oct. 9: Billy Roy Danger and the

Rhythm & Brews grand opening next week

Gary Grape of the South Sound Blues Association sent us details for the grand opening of Rhythm & Brews, a new joint that’s been on our radar since late last year.

Popular jazz and blues combo Maia Santell and House Blend will christen the new joint, located at 933 Market Street in Tacoma, with a performance on Oct. 1. And then SSBA’s 2010 International Blues Challenge winner Blues Redemption will perform on Oct. 2, with music starting at 8:30 p.m. both nights. There will be no cover charge either night. Rhythm & Brews coming to downtown Tacoma

On Nov. 23, the Washington State Liquor Board received a liquor license application for Rhythm & Brews, a nightclub that seems to be on the way to 933 Market St., in Tacoma. [Corrected from a previous version of this post. The application has not yet been approved.]

If that address sounds familiar, that’s the former location of the short-lived South Sound Garage and Juno venues. Chris Wallis, who owned the South Sound Garage, is listed as owner on the application, but could not be reached for comment on what he’s doing as of this post. Stay tuned.
