Matt Sader talks Argonaut’s comeback, retooled sound (audio)

Let the countdown begin. This weekend, recently reunited Tacoma sludge-metal titans Argonaut will unveil a new lineup featuring singer-bassist Matt Sader, drummer Brandon Boote, guitarist Dave “I’m in every band in Tacoma” Takata and newcomer Trina Walker replacing guitarist Scott Talbott, who took off for Reno.

Sonic Shakedown benefit to celebrate Tacoma garage-rock legacy

The Dignitaries’ Reylan Fernandez sent over details for a bill his band put together for Nov. 6 at the New Frontier Lounge. The show will be called Sonic Shakedown, a celebration of Tacoma’s garage-rock history featuring the Plastards, The I Love Myselfs, the Coloffs, Apache Chief and, of course, the Dignitaries. Darrell Fortune of the Northwest Convergence Zone podcast will emcee, and proceeds will benefit the American Diabetes Association.

Music and Art in Wright Park benefit show

Earplugs are not optional on Saturday. At least not if you want your ears to survive the epic metal sludge and hardcore mayhem that Mico de Noche and C.F.A. will unleash on Tacoma’s New Frontier Lounge. The bands are looking to raise about $2,500 to help finance the MAWP festival, which will also feature the F-ing Eagles, Gold Teeth, Lozen, Girl Trouble and more on Aug. 21 at Wright Park.

Video of the Week: Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside

Sallie Ford and the Sound Outside opened for the Avett Brothers last year and were more recently named Portland’s best new band by Willamette Week.

Why bring all that up? They’re kicking off the second not-quite-annual Squeak and Squawk festival Thursday night at the New Frontier Lounge. That’s why.

Tiny Vipers, Typhoon among acts tapped for Squeak and Squawk 2

Some of you may recall the Squeak and Squawk Festival, a Tacoma indie-rock happening that went on at the now defunct Helm Gallery and then fledgling rock room, the New Frontier Lounge, in October 2008. (I blogged about it here if you don’t.)

The festival’s second not quite annual installment will returned to the New Frontier next Thursday with shows running through June 14. But while those dates have been on my radar for a while, I didn’t know about a batch of all-ages shows until I caught up with even organizer Sean Alexander today.

Grit City Bootlegs No. 47: Tacoma super-group Manhammer unveiled

There was a big local buzz leading up to the debut of Manhammer, the new hard rock outfit that formed from the ashes of Dirty Knockers, the late Brian Redman’s last band. You could call the quintet a T-town super-group with members of Gold Teeth and Cody Foster’s Army also in the fold – Tacoma’s Down, if you will.

Needless to say, the New Frontier Lounge was totally packed last night. Of course, I had my point an shoot in hand, and I braved spilled beer and gnarly injuries
