Alice in Chains return to KeyArena, record 3D concert film

It’s hard to believe Alice in Chains v. 2.0 has been around for half a decade now. And on Friday, the resurgent Seattle metal gods returned home for the third time in just over a year, an event that market the latest phase in their improbable comeback.

In 2005, the band’s surviving members resurfaced for a star-studded South Asian tsunami benefit at Seattle rock club, the Premier (a venue since renamed Showbox SoDo.) Later that year, they tapped singer-guitarist William DuVall to fill in for fallen front man Layne Staley, who died in 2002 of an apparent drug overdose.

The Deftones’ Chino Moreno on unreleased CD “Eros,” accident that sidelined band mate (audio)

Alice in Chains, Mastodon and the Deftones have joined forces for the BlackDiamondSkye tour, which will drop by Seattle’s KeyArena on Friday. And someone will be notably missed during the Deftones’ set, with bassist Chi Cheng still sidelined nearly two years after the accident that put him into a coma in November 2008.

Friday’s Alice in Chains show to be filmed in 3D

Alice in Chains’ headlining set at KeyArena on Friday will be filmed in 3D, the band announced today. A in C has hired HDLogix to shoot their hometown stop with the BlackDiamondSkye tour, which also features hard rock heavyweights Mastodon and the Deftones.

In charge of filming will be director Tim Cronenweth and director of photography Jeff Cronenweth. But the band has yet to announce where and when the 3D footage will eventually turn up.

Alice in Chains teams up with Mastodon, Deftones for big arena tour

Alice in Chains has warmed up with a bunch of theater dates since releasing comeback album “Black Gives Way to Blue” last year. And now the resurgent grunge-metal heroes have announced plans to take it up several notches with its Black Diamond Skye tour, which will bring take over Seattle’s KeyArena on Oct. 8.

A in C has tapped Mastodon and Deftones for support, with other regional dates at Vancouver, BC’s General Motors Place on Oct. 7 and Portland’s Memorial Coliseum on Oct. 9.
