Sunday four of this region’s hottest harp players will converge on Blues Vespers at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 901 N. J St., in Tacoma. It’s Paul Green’s annual harmonica showcase which will feature Bill Lee, Brian Mattocks, Jay Maybin and Green, all backed by Paul Green’s Straight Shot.

Local hip-hop and R&B group Island Trybe is trying to end a sad year on a positive note beginning with ‘Nesian Fest, which starts at 8 p.m. Saturday at Hell’s Kitchen.
Island Trybe organized the event with Aomas Entertainment as a showcase of Pacific Islanders active in the local hip, R&B and reggae scenes. As Island Trybe manager Sean Lizama explained, “’Nesian” is just shorthand for some of the regions local Islanders hail from – Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia. Read more »
I do my best to capture the flavor of our vibrant, little rock scene through clips I post as Grit City Bootlegs. But now you can see what it looks like when someone really knows how to edit. And, you know, they’re not shooting with a pocket cam. I got this message today from Zach Varnell of the Warehouse Tacoma yesterday.
Hey everyone,
I usually don’t like to send out mass emails. I just thought I’d share this really exciting project I’ve had the privilege to co-produce with my friend Ty Kalberg and the fine folks at the Warehouse. We’ve shot a few live ‘take away’ style shows over the last 6 months with various artists from the northwest. We’re really excited to share these everyone. Read more »
Today’s 10th anniversary concert for Tacoma School of the Arts has been moved indoors. An organizer posted this change of venue announcement today on Facebook:
Hey everyone! Due to the rain, we will be moving tonights event just 2 blocks to Urban Grace Church – the same show will be on the brand new mainstage. Same four great SOTA bands, same celebration, same $5 ticket ($10 for non sota students). We’ll see you tonight at 6 PM at Urban Grace Church, 902 Market Street, downtown.!
This show was originally going to be held at Pierce …
I’ve finally worked out the bugs and we have some video from Bumbershoot 2010. It’s from the Malvides set earlier this afternoon at the Mural Amphitheatre stage.
I’m a jaded rock critic, hence my initial resistance to Lady Gaga. Sure, her hits are kinda catchy, but they’re also kinda disposable. She’s sooo edgy, but really Madonna had all the gender-bending and sacrilegious video imagery down to a science way back in 1990 (and, really, Peaches pushes the boundaries way further than both of them.) But I must confess, I’m on board for the Artist Formerly Known As Stefani Germanotta’s stop Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. Mostly I want to see what kind of wacky outfit she shows up in – you know, if she’ll reprise her telephone-head ‘do or dust off that Kermit the Frog stole she wore that one time.
The Fun Police are really weird. That is to say, the septet is one of South Sound’s most offbeat and wildly inventive bands, with a creative vision that encompasses genre-blurring party anthems – parts punk, Celtic, reggae and country – satirical PSA videos and even good grub. (Fun Police associate “Fryin’” Ryan Hatcher served up gourmet grits during the band’s performance at Tacoma’s Grit City Fest in June, as captured on film here.)
At the moment, the “Bullies in Blue” are busy winding down their first West Coast tour with their hard-drinkin’ homies from Ten Miles of Bad Road. Singer-guitarist Kevin Schulz – a.k.a. Ranger Ruffhousen, has kept me up to speed on some of the highlights: Lots of busking, some bridge diving, a possibly schizophrenic break-dancer. Getting chased by real police outside of Disneyland. You know, the usual. But Sunday, they’ll both be back in town for Ten Miles’ Outlaw Music Festival at O’Malley’s Irish Pub.
We’ve got a related story running in Sunday’s Sound Life section. Meanwhile, enjoy some of the band’s music videos and PSAs.
