Grit City Bootlegs No. 68: An interview and new tunes from Big Wheel Stunt Show

Big Wheel Stunt Show will unleash their new album “Cheetah Milque” on Tacoma Saturday night with a CD release party at the New Frontier Lounge. We’ll have a related story on one of Tacoma’s most talented rock bands in Friday’s GO section.

But in the meantime I thought I’d share this interview from last week at the Frontier. And if you hit the “more” button you can also check out several performance videos I shot with my little Kodiak point-and-shoot last Saturday at Supernova downtown. These boys rock!

Big Wheel Stunt Show video shoot turns steamy

Renagade calendar girl Ruby Velvet.

What I expected Saturday afternoon when I showed up at Supernova’s downtown location yesterday afternoon was a video shoot for “When the Mountain Blows,” the closing cut from Big Wheel Stunt Show’s rockin’ new album “Cheetah Milque.” What it turned out to be? A steamy calendar shoot for the Renagade Girls. The rowdy and often scantily clad ambassadors of Tacoma’s Renagade Bikes had taken over the hair salon for a 1930s, gangster-themed hootenanny with Big Wheel playing the house band. (And yes, they spell renegade that way.)

I Defy undergoing “trial separation”

All is not well in I Defy camp. So says vocalist Jason McKibbon who last night said he and the veteran Tacoma punk act are going through “a trial separation.” More specifically, McKibbon said he’d quit the group three weeks ago, angered by unpaid bills related to the recording of I Defy’s forthcoming album and DVD.

“I can’t keep spinning my wheels like this,” he said, though he predicted “The album and the dvd will still come out.

Sorry to break the news, I Defy fans. But maybe this clip, from happier times at the old Hell’s

Northwest Convergence Zone to launch 24-hour online music programming

The Northwest Convergence Zone guys plan to launch a 24-hour online music station later this month. I just got of the phone with co-founder Darrell Fortune, who launched the popular, weekly NWCZ podcast in 2009. And he tells me that his crew will have NWCZradio.com up and running by Feb. 18.

The story and/or interview audio will be up shortly. Meanwhile, check out the video to one of RoHo’s new songs, “The Long Way Home,” which is sure to be on the set list Friday night.

Get to know Sweet Kiss Momma (video)

Just ‘cause they’re from the Northwest doesn’t mean they can’t rock like Skynyrrrrrrrrrd! Sweet Kiss Momma is one of South Sound’s most popular “southern” rock acts. (Hey, go with it. Puyallup is south of where I’m sittin’, anyway.) And the band debuted this slick, new mini doc during their most recent appearance at Jazzbones. Check it out.

F-ing Eagles world conquest, phase two

Around here we’ve known the F-ing Eagles are pretty rad for a while. See for yourself tonight when they open for surf-guitar legend Dick Dale tonight at Hell’s Kitchen; booking guru Flash says they go on at 10.

But soon potentially millions will have heard T-town’s grittiest garage-rockers thanks to a few well-placed cuts from the band’s first two discs, “A Million Dollars Worth of Music” and last year’s “Midnight Sour.”

Local rock faves Roman Holiday were at the New Frontier Lounge last night shooting some video before Rock N’ Roll Bingo. But it seems the main event is set for Jan. 14 when they’re filming for a DVD with their homie Ben Union. Here’s the announcement they put out Facebook this week.

Revengers, Bloodhunger and Swampy Draws lineup changes

A few popular Tacoma bands will look a little different in the near future. For starters, Revengers will play their last show with vocalist Eric Quinn on Friday night at the New Frontier before the Mighty Quinn heads off to law school in Michigan. I ran into Revengers beatmeister Jeff Berghammer this morning when he was getting some coffee, and he said he and his mates are contemplating going on with a new singer. But can they find one that emotes quite like Eric? Methinks no.
