Grand Duchy, “Petit Fours”

It’s a yin-yang thing. The Pixies’ Black Francis brought the post-punk angst and guitar squall. Wife Violet Clark brought her love of new wave and some sweet, girlie vocals. Together they made a great, if not perfect, pop album. “Lovesick” – a song Clark penned about being away from her rock star boyfriend, before they got married – was stuck in my head like few other cuts this year.

Grit City Bootlegs No. 39: The Fun Police CD release party (video)

Q: When is it actually good to have the police crash your party?

A: When they’re Tacoma’s Fun Police. They’ll get the festivities all regulated, yo!

These videos come from the band’s CD release party last Friday at the new South Tacoma Way nightclub, the Stonegate. Apologies since my normally reliable camera loses a lot of the vocals in the mix. But hey, who needs to understand lyrics? It’s fun just watchin’ people jump around and act crazy. My personal favorite: The dude in the red shirt in the “Dumpster Diving” clip.

Grit City Bootlegs No. 32: The Color of East (video)

You know, I debated posting a clip of Tacoma’s the Color of East that I shot earlier this month at the New Frontier Lounge. I’m learning that while the Flip Ultra HD has decent picture quality, it doesn’t exactly have the greatest microphone for bootleggin’.

Visqueen plays entire new album at Bumbershoot (video)

Visqueen just unveiled their new album “Message to Garcia,” played in its entirety on Bumbershoot’s Broad Street lawn stage, under a torrential downpour that – for singer-guitarist Rachel Flotard – recalled that time she backed up buddy Neko Case at Sasquatch and “the ‘Wizard of Oz’ was pretty much re-enacted.”

Sons of Ivan on the South Sound Mix Tape

Sure, the Sons of Ivan broke up and all, freeing up Jason Falk to play with Mono in VCF, Mike Krushka to sing with the Legend of Bigfoot and the Fernandez bros (Reylan and Lino) to work on their new garage-rock band, the Dignitaries. But that doesn’t mean we can’t remember this Tacoma band, courtesy of a track I added to the South Sound Mix Tape.

They still maintain a MySpace page where you can hear more here.

Grit City Bootlegs No. 25: The Legend of Bigfoot

No, this post isn’t about a mysterious, furry dude who occasionally shows up in people’s Super 8 footage. It’s about a new psych-rock band that’s emerged on the Tacoma scene. I’ve got some footage from the Legend of Bigfoot’s recent set at Bob’s Java Jive (a spot where I’ve been meaning to shoot some boots for a while.)

Appropriately enough, I didn’t bring a tripod, so some of the camera work is about as shaky as those old Sasquatch clips from the ’60s. But, hey, it’s a bootleg, right? And I got the whole set if you’re curious about this promising, new outfit. (If you’re short on time, I’d hit the “more” button and skip down to the third clip, a song called “Lonesome Being,” which was my favorite.) Check it out, then learn more on their MySpace page.
