Spoon interview (audio)

Spoon’s “Transference” is my favorite rock album of 2010 so far, so it goes without saying that I’m stoked to be checking out the first half of the band’s two-night stand in Seattle in a few hours at the Moore Theatre.

And finally I’ve had time to post a few clips from my interview with bassist Rob Pope who last month talked about …

… living in Seattle and the Austin-bred band’s Northwest ties.

… how he joined Spoon after Get Up Kids.

… Spoon’s gradual rise and

Motley Crue did it. Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters did it. And now it’s the Pixies’ turn to take one of their iconic albums on tour; their 1989 classic “Doolittle” to be more specific, with bassist Kim Deal blurting out updates throughout their set at the Paramount Theatre Thursday night, the first half of a two-night stand.

“The beer’s almost gone out of the refrigerator. All the cool people have gone home,” she joked as the Pixies rock party neared its finale.

Hit the “more” button to check out the set list, find details for tonight’s show here and check back later for a few scenes from the show.

Grit City Bootlegs No. 37: Tacoma’s Ben Union

Saturday (Nov. 14) will be your last chance to catch local singer-songwriter Ben Union in concert for a while as he shares a bill with Doxology and Roman Holiday at Jazzbones.

Ben will debut his band’s latest lineup, which includes little bro’ Jared Mira on drums, Israel Hickey on guitar and Josh Stull on bass. And he’ll play material from the debut record he’s working on at Pacific Studios, maybe even this cut, which is called “Paul Sartre.”

Grit City bootlegs No. 33: Scenes from Top of Tacoma’s birthday bash (video)

Last night, Top of Tacoma celebrated two years of being McKinley Hill’s hippest destination. And the Top had a little help from a couple of T-town’s hottest bands, Revengers and the F-ing Eagles. Apologies in advance for the dark footage, but these clips will still give you an idea of what went down if you missed it.

Grit City Bootlegs No. 32: The Color of East (video)

You know, I debated posting a clip of Tacoma’s the Color of East that I shot earlier this month at the New Frontier Lounge. I’m learning that while the Flip Ultra HD has decent picture quality, it doesn’t exactly have the greatest microphone for bootleggin’.

Grit City Bootlegs No. 30: The Missionary Position at Station 56 (video)

The other day I added a couple of tracks from Post Stardom Depression front man Jeff Angell’s newest band, The Missionary Position, to the South Sound Mix Tape. Then I took Angell up on his invite to check his trio out at Tacoma rock club Station 56 on Sunday.

TMS was kind of a square peg on an XIL records bill topped by the massively aggro Church of Hate. But Angell and company held their own, delivering swaggering, bluesy versions of several cuts from their “Diamonds in a Dead Sky” album, sans the drum loops and horns you’ll hear on the CD (though Angell says they perform the songs that way, too, depending on the venue.)

But enough jibba jabba. My favorite cut was called “Why Me? Why Now?”

From David Cross to Katy Perry, more scenes from Bumbershoot 2009

Comedian David Cross: "You know what I hate worse than a pedophile? A racist pedophile. That's just ignorant!" Cross read just enough from his new book "I Drink for a Reason" to qualify for Bumbershoot's literary stage at Bagley Wright Theatre, but mostly did standup with a little help from his friends. Here he and "Daily Show" correspondent Wyatt Cenac rock the "Bumberkeys." Had to be there. (Photo by Ernest Jasmin)
Comedian David Cross: “You know what I hate worse than a pedophile? A racist pedophile. That’s just ignorant!” Cross, one of Sunday’s hottest attractions at Bumbershoot, read just enough from his new book “I Drink for a Reason” to qualify for the literary stage at Bagley Wright Theatre, but mostly did standup with a little help from his friends. Here he and “Daily Show” correspondent Wyatt Cenac rock the “Bumberkeys.” Uh, you had to be there.

Comedians Doug Benson and Maria Bamford also delivered hilarious sets, with Benson notably localizing a joke about a street preacher demanding to know if he was going to Hell. “No, but it’s on the way if you need a lift,” he said. “We are going to Puyallup.” (Photo by Ernest Jasmin)
