Elton John, Billy Joel set lists

“We’re in a great mood tonight,” Sir Elton John declared a few songs into his solo portion of last night’s Face 2 Face show at KeyArena; a statement that seemed patently obvious following a barn-burning romp through “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.”

There weren’t any big surprises, unless you count Billy Joel strapping on a guitar to tear through Jimi Hendrix’s “Foxy Lady.” But during the latter half of their two-night stand in Seattle (the first being Wednesday) the Rocket Man and the Piano Man kept the party rockin’ with three hours of hit after classic hit. Here’s what

Alice in Chains set list (Friday night)

Alice in Chains’ set last night was similar to what they delivered at the Moore last fall. That is to say it was spectacular, but even sharper after several months on the road.

But so much for that fantasy that Sir Elton John – tonight’s co-headliner at KeyArena – might make a cameo. Sure, he appears on the poignant title track from Alice’s new “Black Gives Way to Blue” album, and he had a couple of days off after Wednesday night’s Face 2 Face set at the Key. But nah! An on-site publicist had good intel that the Piano

Brandi Carlile, “Give Up the Ghost”

Maple Valley’s Brandi Carlile and twin songwriting partners Tim and Phil Hanseroth (a.k.a. the “Grey’s Anatomy” house band) turned to some heavy hitters to help out with their third disc, namely super-producer Rick Rubin, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Elton John. The disc isn’t as seamless as “The Story” or Carlile’s self-titled debut, with “Caroline,” the show tune-style ditty that features the Rocket Man, being a notable square peg. But “That Year,” “Oh Dear” and other cuts represent some of Carlile’s best and most personal material to date.

Brandi Carlile’s fans have heard the Maple Valley-based singer-songwriter road test “Dying Day,” “Dreams” and other cuts from her forthcoming, third album for months, most notably during a breathtaking date with Seattle Symphony at Benaroya Hall last November, my favorite performance of 2008.

And come midnight, they’ll finally be able to get their hands on the recorded versions of those tunes as the Rick Rubin produced “Give Up the Ghost” arrives on iTunes and a record store near you.
