Playing with dad’s band, touring with Zeppelin tribute emotional experiences for Bonham

Bonham: Keeping dad’s legacy alive (photo by Robert Knight)

With Led Zeppelin, “Bonzo” John Bonham provided the techtonic beats behind some of rock’s most epic recordings. Then his untimely death brought the band’s legendary run to a sudden, shocking halt on Sept. 25, 1980.

But 30 years later, his legacy lives on with his son. It has been three years since Jason Bonham sat in with Zeppelin’s surviving members during a one-off reunion gig at London’s O2 Arena (“Kashmir” video here.) And now Jason Bonham’s Led Zeppelin Experience is ready to rattle Seattle’s WaMu Theater with “Kashmir,” “Stairway to Heaven” and other Zep classics on Saturday night.

The Sonics will perform in Olympia on New Year’s Eve

Here’s some big news manager Buck Ormsby wasn’t quite ready to announce yesterday: The Sonics will play Olympia’s Capitol Theatre on New Year’s Eve, only the legendary Tacoma garage-rock outfit’s third local performance since the classic lineup broke up in 1967.

The show will support the Sonics’ forthcoming EP “8,” featuring the band’s first new songs since the ’60s (see previous blog item.) The band also plans to shoot video footage during the Olympia performance for a future DVD release.

TNT Beatles freak reports back from Sir Paul’s San Fran shindig

How big of a Beatles freak is Debbie Cafazzo, my bud over on the TNT’s education beat? She flew down to San Francisco last weekend to check out Paul McCartney at the Bay Area’s AT&T Park. She even wrote a little something up to share with all her fellow fanatics out there.

By Debbie Cafazzo
Staff writer
I am still recovering from my 24-hour Paul McCartney experience.

No… it wasn’t THAT kind of experience. Although a woman of a certain age never abandons hope!

Grit City Bootlegs No. 58: The Fabulous Wailers return

The Fabulous Wailers had been out of commission since December as front man Kent Morrill battled serious illness (related story here.) But the godfathers of Northwest rock roared back into action this weekend with a pair of crowd pleasing and sometimes emotional performances, the first Saturday in Issaquah and the second last night capping off a Gulf coast benefit at the Swiss Tavern. Morrill sounded great, and shaky camera work aside, I managed to record this garage-rock classic for those of you who missed it.

Last fall, I reported that Tacoma garage-rock legends, the Sonics, were working on a batch of new songs with Seattle producer Jack Endino. (If you missed that post, click here to find audio of lead howler Jerry Roslie describing the new songs.

Hello Ernest

The Sonics will be leaving for our 4th European tour on June 30. We’ll be playing festivals in Italy, Norway, Finland, Spain, Belgium and Germany.
