Imagine if Metallica, after two decades of packing arenas in the United States, had to reboot and play a series of club shows to win over new fans in, say, Turkey. That’s roughly what symphonic metal band X Japan is doing with its first U.S. tour.

X Japan is one of the biggest bands on the planet that you’ve probably never heard of, having sold 30 million records and DVDs at home in Japan and sparked a music and fashion movement called “Visual-Kei,” a precursor to some of the anime styles catchin’ on with some teens over here.

The band headlined Seattle’s Paramount Theatre on Friday. And as some of you read in last week’s GO section, I caught up with drummer, pianist and principal songwriter Yoshiki Hayashi in the days leading up to the show. Here’s some of what he had to say about …

… patching up old friendships and reuniting the band years after the suicide of guitarist Hide (hee-day) Matsumoto.

… going back to basics and when U.S. fans can expect the X Japan’s English language debut.
