Around the time “The Runaways” hit movie theaters earlier this year you would have thought just Joan Jett and Cheri Currie were planting the seeds of grrl powered rock revolution back in the ‘70s. But Saturday night at the Puyallup Fair, Heart’s Ann and Nancy Wilson reminded the sold-out grandstand who the hardest rocking chicas from that decade really were, between the tough-as-nails riffs of “Magic Man” and “Barracuda” and Ann’s still potent banshee wail.
The sisters Wilson and their band – guitarist Craig Bartock, drummer Ben Smith, bassist Ric Markmann and pig-tailed keyboard player Debbie Shair – delivered about an hour and a half of hits, along with newer cuts from this year’s “Red Velvet Car” CD. “Even It Up” went over well among the lesser hits, thanks to effective mash-up treatment with the Stones’ “Gimme Shelter.” Reagan era power ballads “These Dreams” and “Alone” brought the house down, as usual, with Ann joking about their ‘80s fashion sense before the latter: “No matter how much we tried, we couldn’t get enough volume in our hair. And we tried everything – everything!”
The hard-rocking “WTF” was the best of the new cuts. And Ann provided a bit of context before the “Red Velvet Car” title cut. “You may have one and you might not even know it,” Ann said. “That’s your best friend the comes to bail you out.”
