I’ve followed singer/rapper Georgia Anne Muldrow for a couple of years and, like Mos Def, I’m smitten with her uplifting neo-soul ballad “Roses” (a cut Mos remade for his his last album, “The Ecstatic.”)
I was looking forward to her set Sunday with Declaime (a.k.a. rapper Dudley Perkins) more than just about any other act at Bumbershoot. And I even got to hang out for a minute. In the interview clip below, the couple talks about their heartfelt brand of hip-hop and why they rebel against trends that land other artists in glossy magazines and on urban radio.
“I’m inspired by anybody who’s coming from the heart and making a sacrifice to speak what’s true,” Muldrow said at one point. “I’m inspired by Malcolm X, I’m inspired by Coltrane. I’m inspired by painters like Basquiat. I’m inspired by people who take a risk to be themselves.”
In case you missed it, I also posted a couple of Bumbershoot performance clips here.
