George Strait, Reba McEntire review and set lists

George Strait has sold something like 70 million records. So plenty of people will passionately disagree with me, especially the guy sitting two rows behind me at the Tacoma Dome Saturday night, screaming “I LOVE YOU, GEORGE STRAIT!” loud enough to rupture a sober man’s vocal chords after every single song. (OK, we get it, dude. Enjoy your laryngitis.) But I really don’t think Strait should go on after Reba McEntire.

The King of Country’s Twang tour showcased three of country’s brightest stars – also opener Lee Ann Womack – with 4 ½ hours of smash hits delivered in the

Michael Franti on John Mayer controversy (interview audio)

I had a million things to ask Spearhead leader, Michael Franti, a musician I’ve admired for years.

How did it feel to have a smash hit with “Say Hey (I Love You)” after more than two decades in the biz? What inspired him to head to Iraq and the Gaza Strip to film his moving anti-war doc “I Know I’m Not Alone?” And what’s up with him never wearing shoes? (He hasn’t, for the most part, for more than a decade.)

But then bonehead John Mayer started dropping n-bombs, and everyone was talking about his

Green Apple Quick Step singer talks comeback, Tacoma roots (interview audio)

Hey, who’s ready for some “Dirty Water Ocean?”

In case you haven’t heard, Seattle post-grunge outfit Green Apple Quick Step is back in action, ready to rock only their second show in about a dozen years Friday night at Tacoma’s Hell’s Kitchen. “Dirty Water” – a cut that earned the band props from none other than “Beavis and Butthead” back in the ‘90s – will definitely be on tonight’s set list.

So says lead singer and Tacoma boy Ty Willman, who I caught up with for Friday’s GO section. Click the links to hear some of what he

Can Coolio turn Jazzbones into a “Gangsta’s Paradise?”

Driving around yesterday, I spied none other than Coolio on the Jazzbones marquee. ‘Bones booking guy Sean Culver later confirmed the April 16 date. Don’t know if I’m that nostalgic for “Gangsta’s Paradise,” but I sure hope he brings some of these when he’s in town.

On a side note, I’m noticing a pattern. Coolio? MC Hammer at the Emerald Queen? So when are Gerardo and Vanilla Ice showing up?

R.I.P. rock photographer Jim Marshall

Another big loss for the rock world as legendary photographer Jim Marshall has died at 74. He captured some of rock’s most iconic images. That photo of Jim Hendrix torching his guitar at the Monterey Pop Festival? Him. That t-shirt you still see people wearing with Johnny Cash flippin’ the bird? His image, too.

I once has the privilege of interviewing the guy – and cantankerous counterpart Baron Wolman – back when I was a cub reporter at the University of Kentucky’s Kernel newspaper. Rolling Stone has an obit and a

MercyMe’s Nathan Cochran previews “Mr. Lovewell” album

Last Friday’s GO cover story previewed the Rock and Worship Road Show, which will take over the Tacoma Dome Thursday with popular Christian rockers MercyMe headlining.

Last week, I posted a clip of something not covered in the story, bassist Nathan Cochran recalling the tragedy that occurred on tour last year. And today I’ve got more from him, this time talking about the fun stuff.
