Tacoma’s popular Sixth Avenue bar strip may have another hot spot this summer in the spot that Tacoma’s Hell’s Kitchen abandoned for downtown late last year.
The owners of Gruv Lounge & Nightclub – a dance club under construction at 3829 Sixth Ave., formerly home to popular rock club, Hell’s Kitchen, which moved downtown – applied for a liquor license on March 25.
Jason Rim said he bought the space a month and a half ago, attracted by the synergy building on the Sixth Avenue. “There are some good bars around there, like Jazzbones and Chopstix and some others,” he said.
Gruv Lounge will feature local and national DJs (think Donalde Glaude, DJ Dan) spinning house music, electro and top 40 mash-ups, according to manager Calvin Murphy. He started his party promotion business, Ocean Grooves, in the same space, when it was occupied by the 6th & Proctor Bar & Grill, in 1999.
“It kind of came full circle,” Murphy said.
The space is under construction, but he expected to be open by August.
On March 25, Vertex International NV LLC, Jungwook Rim and Ok Seoung Jang applied for a liquor license for Gruv Lounge & Nightclub. I just spoke to accountant Richard Kwon who confirmed plans to open a nightclub.
More details as I nail them down.
