Guitar Hero Kurt Cobain controversy is brewing

Kurt Cobain’s appearance in Guitar Hero 5 is stirring up some serious controversy this week. For starters, check out the story in the UK’s Guardian newspaper that quotes Cobain’s widow, Courtney Love, saying the way her late husband is represented in the new game “a travesty” and that she will sue the game’s producer, Activision.

Various sources have reported that the unlockable Cobain character sings Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” and other rock hits.

Oh, snap! That almost sounds like a dig.

Activision has fired back at Love. From the Guardian story:

The Guitar Hero developers said that it was “great to work with [Love]“. “Courtney supplied us with photos and videos,” said Activision vice president Tim Riley. “She picked the wardrobe and hairstyle, which turned out to be the ‘Teen Spirit’ look, then we went back and forth over changes – some subtle, some not so subtle … [She wanted a] sort of athletic definition but not overly so.”

And this statement just showed up in my inbox from publicity firm Nasty Little Man:

Activision is responding to queries regarding the usage of Kurt Cobain’s likeness in Guitar Hero 5 with the following statement:

“Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero® 5.”

Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl, the two surviving members of Nirvana, have no say whatsoever in the usage of Kurt Cobain’s likeness.

  1. Who cares? Cobain has been dead for so stinking long. This is just a stupid game.

  2. Another new write-up with good points, I’ve been a lurker right here for a while but wish to be a lot more engaged from now on.
