Critic’s iPod (on the genius of Mark Lanegan)

Another cross section of songs I’m obsessed with at the moment …

“One Hundred Days” Mark Lanegan

As much as I’ve dug Mark Lanegan’s output with the Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age, I’ve been guilty of sleeping on his solo stuff. But I revisited 2004’s “Bubblegum” recently, and this song is so sublime. Yet another disc that makes me want to kick myself for not putting it on that year’s best albums list.

“Beyond and Back” X

I’d started craving X again – especially watching the excellent documentary about them, "The Unheard Music” – right before the L.A. punk veterans’ headlining dates at the Showbox at the Market were announced. Can’t wait, and can’t get this song out of my head lately. I prefer this live mix from “Make the Music Go Bang” to the more subdued original from “Wild Gift.” Exene’s tortured howl gives me chills.

“Mistaken for Strangers” The National

It took me longer than other critics to latch onto this moody band from my old stompin’ grounds in the ‘Natti. I’m really likin’ this song at the moment.
