Hate mail of the week

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten a really clever or funny one. This one, in response to the column I recently wrote about Rick James, will have to do:

I bought the cd this week and love it!!!!!! I find your negative review of the cd, mindless, thoughtless, and you lack any vision!

[Excerpted from my column]

The bad news is that it takes awhile to get to that little nugget of funk. Most of the album is bogged down by generic quiet storm fodder; songs that sound

A bloody scene

Here’s some of what you missed from 3 Inches of Blood’s late show at Hell’s Kitchen, which wound down early this morning at Hell’s Kitchen, which wound down early this morning. But I ask you, when some dude wearing a hockey mask shows up in the mosh pit is it time to worry? He goes by Bear, by the way. And thankfully he left his chainsaw at home.

Blue Scholars rocked the house last night

I arrived a bit late to last night’s MassLine show, and was bummed to miss most of Gabriel Teodros’s performance. I hear he was pretty nice. But luckily caught all of Seattle’s latest buzz group, Blue Scholars, and was evenly pleasantly surprised by what I saw. I’ve always liked Geologic and DJ Sabzi, but hadn’t seen them for a while. And the tight, energetic set they turned in last night showed a lot of growth. And I loved the chunky, new beats Sabzi’s created for the new disc, “Bayani.” That’s due from renowned rap label Rawkus next month. And I

Bloodbath!!!

The guys in 3 Inches of Blood aren’t technically hometown heroes, since they hail from three hours up the road in Vancouver, BC. But we might as well adopt ‘em. They lived in T-town for a while last year as they worked on their third album, “Fire Up the Blades” (due from from Roadrunner in late June.) And ex-3IB bassist Brian Redman is even a bona fide, full-time Tacoman – one who has possibly hooked you up with a Boddington’s and a shot of Jameson over at Doyle’s some night.

So I guess what I’m sayin’

Gabriel Teodros talks Northwest hip-hop

Blue Scholars are Seattle’s biggest hip-hop success story since Sir Mix-A-Lot, having recently inked a deal with renowned rap label Rawkus for distribution of their new album “Bayani.” But Gabriel Teodros – their opening act tonight at Hell’s Kitchen – has started making waves of his own, having recently gotten positive reviews for his new album “Lovework” in Urb and Rolling Stone (from none other than influential critic Robert Christgau in the latter.) And I caught up with him recently for a quick rap session and we talked about …
