Ice Cube speaks

IceCube.jpgCelebs don’t come much bigger than Ice Cube. From his early days with NWA to starring roles in 15 years worth of flicks, including “Boyz

in the Hood,” “XXX: State of the Union” and the “Barber Shop” movies, Cube has made a huge mark on American pop culture. And Saturday, he’ll perform songs from his first solo album in five years, “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” at the inaugural KUBE Comedy Jam.

You can read about the movie he’s shooting in Vancouver, BC in the Friday (Sept. 15) edition of

MxPx vs. Sir Mix-A-Lot: To Bremerton or Not to Bremerton

mxpx.JPG

It was inevitable. MxPx’s song "Move to Bremerton" was recently tapped by the Kitsap County Consolidated Housing Authority to promote its ongoing development and civic promotion efforts. And the band is headlining a concert at Bremerton’s Admiral Theatre to help with the effort. Click here to learn about that.

I hear condos and new businesses are springing up left and right in Bremerton, just like they are here in T-town. But the skeptical sort that I am, I’m not sure if I buy into this "Move to Bremerton" business

A new venue is on its way. Seattle’s First & Goal Inc. has teamed up with one AEG Live, one of the world’s biggest concert promoters, to open the WaMu Theater at Qwest Field this fall, First & Goal announced this week.

Sirens Sister at Rocket Records

SirensSister MAIN 060406 3907[1].jpg

Rewind back to 2003 and a few people had Vendetta Red pegged as the “next big thing” emerge from Puget Sound, based in no small part on the fact that the band’s second album, “Between the Never and Now” had just come out on Columbia, and they had even cracked rotation on MTV2.

While that promise never quite came to fruition, the band remained a popular staple of the Seattle scene before disbanding earlier this year. And from the ashes of Vendetta Red comes Sirens Sister, a more pop

Last night’s Melvins show

So many of the the Melvins’ songs – “Queen,” “The Bit” – already hit with the force of a category 5 hurricane. So how could they possibly add more punch an already punishing sound? By sticking a second drummer into the mix, apparently.

For the latest album “A Senile Animal” – due from Ipecac on Oct. 10 – singer-guitarist Buzz Osbourn and drummer Dale Crover teamed up with singer-bassist Jared Warren and drummer Coady Willis, a duo better known as Big Business. And while the Melvins rarely disappoint live, the interplay between Crover and Willis definitely took things

Death Cab show announcement

Every time Death Cab for Cutie has one of those “we’ve arrived” moments, they just wind up topping it a few months later. The past year has found them enjoying the fruits of major label success, cracing the covers of glossy rock mags and selling out theaters across the country. Now they’re ready to tackle the arena circuit.

House of Blues just announced a new Death Cab date at KeyArena, set for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9 at KeyArena. Jenny Lewis – who performs with Death Cab leader Ben Gibbard’s other band, the Postal Service – has

The Mars Volta urine chucking incident revisited

Just got a call from a photog from Spin who was looking for images from the Mars Volta’s snake-bitten performance at Endfest. Specifically, he was hunting down a pic that captured the pee hurling incident I mentioned in my report on Endfest.

In the process, he directed me to a You Tube video that captures the meltdown, which began after singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala insulted a cluster of kids who had started moshing. Later, he challenged someone in the crowd who had apparently been throwing something to a fight. And then the incident captured on You Tube happened. You

Talib Kweli puts on his best poker face

kweli1sm.jpgI’ve interviewed tons of artists who don’t want to spell out what their songs mean for fear of tainting how fans relate to the music. But Talib Kweli took this notion to the extreme yesterday when I called him on his cell, looking for a few tidbits to whet fans’ appetites until his new album drops on Nov. 7.

Kweli is one of the most complete and insightful rap lyricists on the scene today, as fans will witness first hand tonight when he spits a few songs from such criminally underrated albums as
