Anybody selling a cheap, reliable car?

Things I learned yesterday:

* With rising gas prices, tow truck operators are passing the cost along to you with rates that are now up from $3 to $4 per mile. Add the hookup fee, and this will cost about 200 bones to get your car from Boeing Field back to T-town.

* Compared to that, the $90 I neglected to spend on Triple-A dues is quite a bargain.

* Having your alternator belt snap while driving on I-5 is what, in mechanics jargon, is considered “bad.” And it costs about another 200 grips to fix.

* It’s often a good idea to follow your intuition, i.e. when you think maybe it’s time to trade in your car for a newer, more reliable model – say, a month before what you’re driving breaks down.

In case you haven’t guessed, my @#%@%#@ car broke down. Agh! And there is actually a marginally good reason to waste a blog entry complaining about it. Much the same way ridiculous gas prices inspired my “high octane” play list a few weeks ago, this state of affairs has inspired me to throw together a car play list. You know, something to inspire me as I go shopping.

Feel free to respond with your own adds. Cheers, and buckle up:

"Car Trouble" Adam Ant

"I Can’t Drive 55" Sammy Hagar

"My Hooptie" Sir Mix-A-Lot

"Muscle Cars" E-40

"@#%@#% My Car" Too Short (Though I might put the emphasis on a different syllable than Mr. Short does at this point.)

"Drive My Car" The Beatles (I’m learning people don’t often make these kinds of offers when you really need them to.)

"Fast Car" Tracy Chapman

"Rental Car" Beck (Something I’ll be using to get to the Gorge on Saturday.)

"I Love My Car" Belle & Sebastian

“Trust Your Mechnic” Dead Kennedys

"Car Wash" Rose Royce (now, just thinking of that song puts me back in a good mood.)

"Gimme the Car" Violent Femmes

“Precision Auto” Superchunk

"Brand New Car" The Rolling Stones

“The Mechanic” Sly & Robbie

"Drive" The Cars (Yeah, I was definitely wondering who was gonna drive me home right around 4 p.m. yesterday. Blast you, Rick Ocasek! Why must you taunt me so?)
