Sumatran tiger cub to make public debut at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium Thursday

The newest addition to the Point Defiance tiger family will make her public debut Thursday.

The rare Sumatran cub was a surprise to Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium staff members who found the newborn in a nest box April 17. Mother Jaya had not shown signs of being pregnant.

The baby tiger might be hard to see in the cub den most of the day while she’s sleeping, according to the zoo.

Visitors can watch as zookeepers bottle-feed the cub and interact with her at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. daily.

Newborn tiger at Point Defiance zoo is a girl, will be hand-reared after mother showed little interest in her

The surprise tiger cub found in a nest box Wednesday morning at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is a girl, staff said today.

She’ll be hand-reared, they said, because mother Jaya has shown little interest in the cub.

Zookeepers are hand feeding the cub every three hours.

They know the routine; the cub’s 8-month old brother, Dumai, was hand-reared for the same reason.

They brought him a playmate of the same age from Tulsa Zoo, Berani, who was in a similar situation. The idea is that the two can learn tiger behavior from each other.

Surprise Sumatran tiger cub born at Point Defiance Zoo

It’s not easy to get clear ultrasound images of a standing, moving tiger.

That’s partly why a newborn Sumatran tiger cub found Wednesday morning in a nest box at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium was such a surprise, staff said, even though they had performed several ultrasounds on mother Jaya in the past few weeks.

Jaya’s behavior and hormones also didn’t suggest she was with cub.

But when staff went to give Jaya a physical and ultrasound Wednesday, she had given birth overnight to the 2.5-pound tiger.

Both mom and newborn seemed healthy, according to the zoo.

Staff hadn’t yet

Point Defiance Zoo’s new tiger cub debuts, needs a name

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium’s new Sumatran tiger cub made its debut Thursday at the zoo’s Cub Den in the Asian Forest Sanctuary.

The 3-week-old cub will live in the Asian Forest Sanctuary, and visitors can see him there sleeping, playing with toys and exploring his world. There will be special keeper interactions each day at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

On its Facebook page, the zoo said the cub weighs almost 9 pounds and is “growing rapidly.” He was born Aug. 22 to Jaya, who gave birth to two cubs in 2010. The Sumatran tiger is

Tiger cub on exhibit at Point Defiance Zoo starting Thursday

The Sumatran tiger cub at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium will make his public debut Thursday.

The cub will be on exhibit in the zoo’s Cub Den starting 1 p.m.

Visitors will see staff interacting with the cub at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily, including health checks and feedings – though his meals don’t last long and will be easy to miss, zoo spokeswoman Kris Sherman said.

The tiger was separated from mother Jaya days after his birth Aug. 22, because he was dehydrated, had a low temperature and was not getting enough milk, zoo staff said.

Tiger cub at Point Defiance Zoo being hand-reared to boost weight

The 6-day old Sumatran tiger cub at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium is being hand-reared after health checks showed he lost weight and was not getting enough milk, the zoo said today.

Staff today moved the cub from the den box where he was born to the zoo’s Animal Health Care clinic.

He was not gaining weight, was dehydrated and had a low temperature, head zoo veterinarian Karen Wolf said.

Mother Jaya was not as attentive to him as she was to the litter she had two years ago, zoo staff said.

She was leaving the den box often, which didn’t

Rare Sumatran tiger cub born at Point Defiance Zoo

Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium welcomed a new tiger into its fold Wednesday night.

The rare Sumatran tiger cub was born at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday to Jaya, who gave birth to two cubs in 2010, the zoo said in a news release. Jaya “and her cub appear to be doing well, and Jaya is a very attentive parent,” the zoo said.

The cub was sired by Malosi, who came to Point Defiance in April from the Honolulu Zoo to breed with Jaya.

The Sumatran tiger is a critically endangered species, and births in zoos are extremely rare, said the zoo’s
