State’s forest restoration project targets Spanaway Park

The state Department of Natural Resources is bringing an urban forestry restoration program to Pierce County, according to a county news release.

Washington Conservation Corps teams will remove English ivy, Himalayan blackberry and yellow-flag iris from Spanaway Park and Bresemann Forest over the next few weeks in Spanaway.

The Urban Forestry Restoration Project enhances the capacity of urban forests to manage stormwater and improve air and water quality, according to the release, by improving the health and functionality of trees and forested areas in urban settings.

Intersection at 176th Street East and 22nd Avenue East near Frederickson to close this weekend

The intersection at 176th Avenue East and 22nd Avenue East in Frederickson will close for construction at 9 p.m. on Friday and reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, according to a Pierce County press release.

Crews will excavate the roadway, place crushed rock and pave the intersection, the release says.

Businesses will remain open during construction and a detour route will be in effect. A detour map is available at piercecountywa.org/fredericksonarea.

Pierce County officials celebrate pilot transportation program at Sumner Senior Center

Several Pierce County officials were on hand Wednesday at the Sumner Senior Center to celebrate the newest transportation project in Pierce County.

Beyond the Borders Connector is a free pilot transportation program available to seniors 65 and older, eligible low-income residents and those with disabilities in Sumner and Bonney Lake, as well as Spanaway, Roy and Yelm. Launched at the beginning of March, it is an extension of a transportation program that has been running for about 10 years throughout Pierce County, and is funded by a grant through Pierce County Community Connections.
