Girls Night Out event in Sumner to raise money for YMCA

Windmill Gardens in Sumner is hosting its spring Girls Night Out event to raise money for an effort to bring a YMCA to the city. The fundraiser is Friday, April 19, 6-9 p.m.

Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow said Wednesday that he will be in attendance in black-tie and tuxedo for the event, which is sponsored by the Rotary Club.

Some of the event’s offerings include wine tastings, appetizers from the Windmill Bistro and a silent auction, as well as live entertainment from the popular a cappella group The Coats.

A concert Sunday, Aug. 12 will support 9-year-old Maari Dickerson, whose third-grade classmates from Washington-Hoyt Elementary School held lemonade stands last month to help raise money for her cancer treatment.

The event will be from 3 p.m. to midnight at the Swiss Tavern in Tacoma, and will feature live bands and both a live and silent auction.

Dickerson is scheduled to begin $90,000 proton therapy in late August, which will beam protons the diseased tissue of her aggressive form of cancer.

Her insurance company denied coverage for the treatment, saying it’s experimental, friends of the family said.

Students hold lemonade stand to support classmate battling cancer

When 9-year-old Maari Dickerson was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer last week, her school decided to rally to help raise funds for her family.

Her third-grade class at Washington-Hoyt Elementary School will host a lemonade stand from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Proctor Farmers Market, at North 27th Street and North Proctor Street.

“We’ve kind of gone with the theme, ‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade,’” said Megan Gibson, Dickerson’s teacher.

Dickerson’s family has been keeping the community informed of her condition via Facebook posts, Gibson said.
