Early election results show strong support for all measures except Bonney Lake park district

BONNEY LAKE

Early results showed voters apparently rejected creation of a park district in Bonney Lake, which would have granted the city authority to tax residents to maintain parks and recreation facilities.

The measure was one of three ballot measures in Tuesday’s special election, all of which were issues concentrated in East Pierce County.

Approval of the Bonney Lake Metropolitan Park District would have created a supplemental tax and established a dedicated funding source for the management, improvement and maintenance of parks, according to the ballot’s explanatory statement.

The Bonney Lake City Council would serve as the ex officio Park District board, according to the release, assessing the needs and park functions that the district would

Bonney Lake council considers at-large system

The Bonney Lake City Council could decide as early as next week whether to move from a ward to an at-large system for council elections.

The council Tuesday night  tabled an ordinance that would have done just that, but the item will be back on the agenda next week.

Under the existing system, most council members are elected from within designated geographic boundaries, or wards. An at-large system would mean all council members would be elected in citywide votes.

Mayor Neil Johnson said it’s an important issue, and the council “wants to make sure citizens get involved” before making a
