SOTA student a top winner in state art contest

Jasmine Broadnax, a sophomore at Tacoma School of the Arts, is a top winner in the state high school art contest, sponsored by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Broadnax’ work, a pen and ink drawing titled “Faux Pas,” is the winner of the governor’s choice award. Her work will be on display in Olympia at the Capitol building.

2nd red wolf pup dies at Point Defiance Zoo; third treated for leg injury

Two red wolf pups recently born at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium have died and a third is being treated for a leg injury.

Five other endangered pups appear to be thriving and are being cared for by their mother Millie, 8, and father Graham, 9, in a den at the Red Wolf Woods exhibit.

The litter – which included four males and four females – was born over a 30-hour period starting on Mother’s Day.

Zoo staff has not determined the genders of the two who died, and said they were the smallest in the litter.

Discuss truth and myths about public education

Tacoma Mayor Marilyn Strickland’s Education Task Force and KBTC Public Television will host a community conversation about the “Myths and Realities of Public Education” from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the University of Washington Tacoma, Carwein Auditorium.
Panelists include:
• Carla Santorno, acting superintendent of Tacoma Public Schools
• Nathan Bowling, teacher, Lincoln Center at Lincoln High School
• Ulises Torres, Lincoln High School student
• Debra Friedman, UWT Chancellor,
• Ken Miller, parent of two Stadium High School graduates
The panel discussion will be moderated by News Tribune Publisher David Zeeck.

Kids learn about baking – and giving back

Students at Pioneer Middle School in DuPont got a lesson in baking bread from scratch earlier this month, compliments of the Vermont-based King Arthur Flour Co.

The program showed students how to bake their own loaves of bread for eating and donating. They learned about the importance of whole grains, as well as some basic science and math that goes into baking.

Students were given ingredients donated by the company to make their own bread at home, and asked to bring one loaf back to school to donate to Tacoma Rescue Mission and My Sister’s Pantry in Tacoma.

Roy’s new police chief takes office

Roy’s new police chief took office this week.

Darwin Armitage is the fifth person to lead the small city’s police department since 2006. He said he plans to stay “as long as (the city) will have me.”

The 51-year-old spent 28 years with the El Paso Police Department, working as an officer, detective, sergeant and lieutenant before retiring in 2010. He moved to the South Sound with his wife to be closer to family in the area, he said

He said he intends to become an active and visible part of the city.

Steilacoom ferry terminal to reopen after remodel

The Steilacoom ferry terminal has been remodeled and will reopen Tuesday after being closed since January for the nearly half-million-dollar renovation. The improvements include WiFi access and energy-efficient windows.

Day Island sewer pipe to be replaced after leaks

A leak in a pipe providing sewer service for Day Island will require Pierce County to replace it.

A temporary main will be installed starting Monday, which will restrict traffic over the Day Island Boulevard bridge to one lane for three days. The permanent replacement will be completed by the end of this year.

County workers repaired leaks in the sewer main last weekend. It is currently working normally but spot inspections will continue.
