Washington State Fair announces photo, quilting contests

The Washington State Fair is inviting entrants for two photography contests, a quilting contest and a tablesetting contest, according to a Fair news release.

The 73rd Northwest International Exhibition of Photography competition draws international entries, and the Seventh Annual Washington State Photographers Exhibition is exclusive for residents in the state, the release says. Entries will be displayed during the annual 17-day fair Sept. 6-22.

Washington State Fair announces fine art contests, incorporates new name into special category

Regional artists are invited to enter the Washington State Fair’s fine art contest in several categories, according to a Fair press release.

Online registration must be completed by Sunday, Aug. 4, and entries are due Aug. 6-8 at the fairgrounds. A total of $4,300 will be awarded to winners in several categories, according to the release, including water media, oils, drawing, mixed media, sculpture, digital art and miniature categories.

A separate, special competition this year invites people to participate in the “Our State Fair” themed category, and art pieces must capture the artist’s view of the State Fair experience, the release says.

VIDEO: Washington State Fair Traveling Farm visits Lakewood elementary school

The Washington State Fair Traveling Farm made its final stop of the school year last week at Lake Louise Elementary School in Lakewood.

It teaches kids about farming and food production using a customized tractor-trailer that drives to schools within a 50-mile radius of the fairgrounds in Puyallup.

Washington State Fair announces name for new roller coaster, winners who coined it

Washington State Fair has a name for its newest ride and the two contest winners responsible for it are from East Pierce County.

The new roller coaster, set to debut in September, will carry the name “Rainier Rush” after fair staff sifted through more than 1,600 entries, according to a fair news release.

Karen Chapman of Puyallup and Melissa Hollenbeck-Barovic of Edgewood both coined the label and won two season passes to the Washington State Fair, as well as 240 ride tickets.

Washington State Fair to host Carnival of Madness Tour featuring Shinedown, Skillet, others

The Washington State Fair announced another concert as part of its annual concert series, according to a news release Monday.

The Carnival of Madness Tour, which includes four American rock bands, is set for Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. Shinedown, Skillet, In This Moment and We As Human will all perform as part of the Washington State Fair Concert Series, which runs Sept. 6-22.

Tickets for the event go on sale Saturday, June 22, at 10 a.m., according to the release. They range from $35-$45 and include fair admission.

Cheap Trick to perform at Washington State Fair as part of annual concert series

Cheap Trick will perform as part of the Washington State Fair Concert Series in the fall, according to a Fair press release.

The hard rock group will perform on Sept. 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $25 to $55, including Fair gate admission, and go on sale Saturday.

Tickets can be purchased online at thefair.com/concerts or in person at the Fair’s box office at  9th Avenue Southwest and Meridian Street on Saturdays from 10 a.m.  to 2 p.m.

Pop stars Carly Rae Jepsen, Hot Chelle Rae added to long list of concerts at the Washington State Fair

A popular pair of Raes in pop music will hit the stage at the Washington State Fair in September, according to a fair news release.

Canadia Idol star Carly Rae Jepsen and the pop quartet Hot Chelle Rae will perform on Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Fair’s concert series.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, June 1, and cost $20-$50 including Fair admission. Tickets can be purchased online at thefair.com/concerts or in person at the Fair’s box office at 9th Avenue SW and Meridian Street on Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., according to the release.

VIDEO: Take a virtual ride on the new roller coaster, set to debut at the Washington State Fair in September

The Washington State Fair announced this month it will get a new permanent roller coaster at the fairgrounds. The looping inversion coaster will debut at the annual event, which runs Sept. 6-22.

A naming contest is under way for fairgoers 13 and older, and this video was released to help entrants come up with the perfect new name. The fair is accepting entries until midnight May 8 at thefair.com/spring-fair/contests.
