Farewell reception slated for Federal Way councilmen

Federal Way is inviting the public to say goodbye and share a piece of cake next week with two City Council members and former mayors who have a combined 28 years in their elected offices.

The reception for departing councilmen Jack Dovey and Mike Park is set for Dec. 6 at 6 p.m., at Federal Way City Hall, 33325 8th Ave. S.

Both men are small business owners, and both were originally appointed to fill vacancies on the council in 1995 before going on to win election to their seats. Dovey held the appointed mayor position in 2008 and 2009.

King County offers free adoption of adult cats

Starting this week Regional Animal Services of King County will not accept adult cats that are surrendered by their owners and will waive adoption fees on current available adult cats.

The ban on accepting cats is temporary, according to the county. The idea is to keep the shelter population low in advance of any possible flood evacuations this winter due to flooding on the Green River.

No garbage pickup today for Waste Management customers

Our news partner KIRO-TV reports that Waste Management has announced that there will be no garbage collection today in its service areas in King and Snohomish counties because the the garbage haulers’ strike.

“If your garbage and yard waste collection was scheduled for today, we will collect up to twice the regular amount of garbage and yard waste next Thursday, April 29,” Waste Management said in a statement this morning.

The company said recyclables will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day.

Lakewood police to take donations at T-Birds game

There are seemingly dozens of companies and organizations that are raising money to help the families of the four fallen Lakewood officers.

There are too many to dedicate individual blog posts to, but we’ll try our best to direct you to some sort of a roundup of these organizations. Meanwhile, the Lakewood Police Independent Guild is the official fund-raiser for the families.
